It's official: Air India part ways with coach Godfrey Pereira
After months of uncertainty, Air India has officially parted ways with former coach Godfrey Pereira on salary issues. The former India international, who is also an Air India employee, had asked for a hike in his salary as he diverted all his time and energy to the team. The A-licensed coach is a flight purser and earns far more than being as the coach of the I-League team.
His only argument was he wanted the same salary as former coach Santosh Kashyap. But as Kashyap was on contract and Pereira being an Air India employee, the management couldn’t go against the rules and decided not to give him a raise.
“I had asked for a raise from the management as I was getting a pay cut being the Air India coach. I had family commitments and other formalities to take care about. For me it was practically impossible for me to work on the current salary. So I said against it,” Pereira told www.kickoffindia .com during the launch of 3rd Mahindra Youth Football Challenge.
Godfrey had a good start to his coaching assignment as he lifted the 125th Durand Cup in New Delhi. He was part of the team during the first three rounds of the I-League but after that he decided to stay away from the team due to salary issues. Since then assistant coach Alex Fernandes has been handling the team.
He said that he was very unhappy not to be part of the team. “For me it’s a heartbreak. Football is my love and not being part of it hurts me more,” he further said.
Air India sports Secretary Dilip Pinge said that they had given an option to Pereira to be mentor of the team but he decided against it. “He was given an option to be part of the team as his experience would have meant a lot to the players. But due to his travelling schedule and everything he said no for that also,” said Pinge.
